Alex Braun, seines Zeichens Frontmann der Synth-Pop Band !distain, begibt sich im Jahr 2018 auf Solo-Pfade. Auflösungsgerüchte sind in diesem Fall übrigens absolut fehl am Platz, denn das neue Album der Stammband steht ebenfalls bereits in den Startlöchern. Vielmehr ist die Solo-EP als ein absolutes Herzensprojekt zu verstehen und kommt !distain auch insofern nicht in die Quere, da es sich bei allen vier enthaltenen Tracks um Coverversionen handelt, welche in all ihrer Diversität Stationen im Leben von Alex Braun markieren.

Nun gibt es ja auf dieser Welt bereits einige Interpretationen fremden Liedgutes, was ein Herausheben aus der Masse natürlich enorm erschwert. Da braucht es schon etwas Besonderes oder gar Außergewöhnliches, um in die Ohren der Fans vordringen zu können, aber dies ist allein schon dadurch gewährleistet, da Alex Braun zu den besten und gefühlvollsten Sängern des Genres gehört. Zum andern hätte man mit mindestens zwei Stücken im Vorfeld nie und nimmer rechnen können.

Da wäre zum einen das Titelstück, ein NDW-Song der Band Zara-Thustra, welcher aus dem Jahr 1982 stammt und bis dato eher als Geheimtipp gilt. Ein deutscher Text zwischen Kitsch und Tiefgang sowie eine minimale bis hymnische Synthie-Instrumentierung ziehen jedoch sofort in ihren Bann und können absolut begeistern. Bemerkenswert ist in diesem Fall auch, dass die Neuinterpretation den offiziellen Segen der Original-Autoren bekommen hat.

Mindestens ebenso ungewöhnlich, aber dafür umso bekannter, ist der im Original von Mary Roos vorgetragene Titelsong der Zeichentrickserie "Pinocchio". Wer sich traut, darf hier mit Herrn Braun hemmungslos in Kindheitserinnerungen schwelgen. Das beschwingt vorgetragene "Wonderful Life" von Black dürfte beim Hören ebenfalls so manch einen Moment aus der Vergangenheit heraufbeschwören und auch "Perfect Day" von Lou Reed wird in nicht wenigen Köpfen für gehörige Gefühlsexplosionen sorgen.

Alles in allem ein tolles Paket, das durch die wunderschönen, weiblichen Backing Vocals, die von Alex´ Tochter Alissa beigesteuert wurden, sowie das gelungene Mastering von Ken Porter zusätzlich veredelt wird.


Alex Braun, frontman of the synth pop band !distain, walks on solo paths in 2018. However, rumours about a band break-up are completely out of place, as !distain´s next album is already at the ready. In fact, this solo EP is a matter very close to Alex Braun´s heart and does not get in !distain´s way in so far as the four EP tracks are all cover versions marking various stages in the life of the artist.

Of course, there have always been interpretations of original songs making it very difficult to stand out from the rest. That requires something special or even extraordinary to be able to catch the fans´ interest which is, however, already guaranteed as Alex Braun is among the best and most expressive vocalists in the genre. Besides, no one would have expected the songs chosen for the EP.

The first is the title track, a NDW song (Neue Deutsche Welle = New German Wave) by the band Zara-Thustra from 1982 and is still regarded as an insider tip. German lyrics between kitsch and thoughtfulness as well as a minimal to hymnic synth orchestration draw the listeners in immediately and get them excited. It is quite noteworthy that this new interpretation got the official blessing of the original authors.

At least as much unusual, but all the more known, is the theme song of the animated series "Pinocchio" originally sung by Mary Roos. Whoever dares to revel shamelessly in childhood memories together with Alex Braun. The vibrantly performed "Wonderful Life" (original track by Black) will also evoke plenty of moments from the past, and Lou Reed´s "Perfect Day" will cause a lot of emotional explosions in the listeners´ minds.

All in all, this is an amazing package which is additionally refined by the wonderful female backing vocals contributed by Alex´ daughter Alissa, as well as Ken Porter´s perfekt mastering.
